Majestic high peaks over Madeira's northern sea
Porto Moniz is made up of the westernmost regions of the Madeira Island. It transitions from a coastline of soft beaches with more populous towns to a more aggressive and majestic scenery with high peaks and cliffs over the frequently rougher northern sea.
The natural pools and various restaurants in the town of Porto Moniz attract thousands of tourists who stop there for a break on their round the island tours.
More inland on the Paúl da Serra plateau we see landscapes very different from the rest of the island. The island can be crossed here by a very high but safe road with views towards the highest peaks and valleys. Often the clouds are below the plateau so the landscape becomes out of this world and the dark basalt outcrops against the soft cotton-like clouds form absolutely unforgettable images.
