Madeira's colourful capital
Funchal was the first European city outside continental Europe. Situated in the Atlantic Ocean, between three continents it has been visited throughout the centuries by many different people, such as the intrepid merchants who made the port so important. On the other hand its excellent climate guarantees that those who come searching for a change of air and escape from wide temperature ranges stay for a long time.
It is the biggest council of the Autonomous Region with the most movement, trade and state services of the archipelago. Hotels are centred here in the capital city and though they spread out to the outskirts of town, Funchal still has the largest number of beds on the island.
There is a lot to see and do in Funchal. If you roam the city with an open and curious mind you will find that every nook and cranny has a story to tell be it from the past or still ongoing.
